Free Activities at the Memorial these School Holidays

Friday July 3, 2009

Get the kids interested in the nation's military history these school holidays with a range of engaging activities at the Australian War Memorial.

A is for Animals

Special programs have been created in conjunction with the last weeks of the vibrant A is for Animals exhibition. Children will discover stories of horses, donkeys, camels, dogs and other creatures that have been part of conflicts from the First World War to the present.

Craft sessions will run on various dates, including July 7- 10 and 13- 14, from 10am.

Storytelling for under fives will run every Friday morning at 10am, and Elizabeth Burness's special storytelling sessions for all ages will be held each Sunday at 2pm.

Discovery Zone

Dodge sniper fire in a First World War trench, take control of an Iroquois helicopter and peer through the periscope of a Cold War submarine.

The hands-on children's space Discovery Zone features five environments inspired by Australia's military history, and is a place where they can climb, jump, crawl, touch and explore. Come and experience it for yourself. Open every day.

Theatre Performances

Stirring performances that recreate the experience of women at war, in Radio Silence and Last Letters, will run from 16 July -19 July at 11:40am and 1:40pm.

NAIDOC Week

The memorial has a rich and diverse collection of objects directly relating to Indigenous Australians who have served at war. As part of NAIDOC Week, free presentations will provide a fascinating insight into indigenous contributions to Australia's participation in military conflict. Presentations will run on July 6 and 8, at 11am.

Open from 10am - 5pm, the Memorial has eight free guided tours every day. Current exhibitions include Over the front: the Great War in the air (permanent) and Conflicts 1945 to today (permanent), and the temporary A is for Animals exhibition, now in its final weeks. Entry is free.
