Canberra Long Weekend Fireworks
Tuesday June 9, 2009
Despite hesitations about Canberra residents' use of fireworks over the long weekend, Industrial Relations Minister John Hargreaves stated yesterday that most Canberrans responsibly let off fire crackers.
Over the long weekend, only around 175 complaints were made while tonnes of fireworks were sold. Regardless of the considerate use of fireworks by Canberra residents, Mr Hargreaves sticks by his hope to propose to cabinet the proposal to change the Dangerous Substances Act to ban the importation of fireworks to the Australian Capital Territory.
For the change to take effect, Mr Hargreaves needs the support of the Liberals or the Greens in the Assembly. Presently the ACT Greens Party is reviewing its policy that doesn't' support a ban but states it wants an ';increasing capacity of ACT Policing to enforce the limited and safe use of fireworks'.
The Greens spokeswoman on industrial relations, Amanda Bresnan told The Canberra Times in relation to the weekend's fireworks that, "obviously, one of the things which we are really interested in seeing is how the regulations were managed and policed last weekend."

"And we need to consider the views of any interested groups, which includes the RSPCA and any industry groups.
"I personally do agree with a ban on fireworks and that comes from my volunteer work with the RSPCA over the last number of years," she said.
