Violence in Canberra Clubs
Wednesday June 10, 2009
An ACT Policing investigative team is looking at a number of gun-point hold-ups in Canberra clubs. Venues that have been targeted in Canberra include the Braddon Club on Lonsdale Street when on Sunday afternoon three masked men entered the venue armed with a hand gun and knives.
Other Canberra clubs that have been targeted include ones in Calwell and Weston. Clubs ACT president, Max Mecer, told The Canberra Times that the burglars told about eight patrons and several staff to lie face down on the floor in the Braddon robbery. "The staff immediately told the patrons to do it, they did that," he said. "The [the offenders] got hold of the duty manager and made them empty the till and safe."
On 11 May two men held up the Calwell Club with a hand gun and knife also telling staff and customers to lie face down on the floor. On 21 May, a man entered Weston Club with a hand gun and bound staff members in an upstairs office before taking off with cash from the safe.
Superintendent Kate Buggy told The Canberra Times that it's too early to know if the three hold-ups are connected.
"It is of great concern to police and we've been working with a number of clubs alerting them to best practice in relation to the prevention of armed robberies," Superintendent Buggy told The Canberra Times.
No one was injured in the three robberies.
