Canberra Girls Prepare for Futures in Trades
Friday May 8, 2009
Canberra girls participated in a Girls Try a Trade Day at the Canberra Institute of Technology yesterday to discover the benefits of working in a trade.
About 200 girls were given the opportunity to learn more about trades such as carpentry, tiling, plastering, glazing and plumbing at the Fyshwick Trade Skills Centre in Canberra.
Yesterday was the first day that the Canberra Institute of Technology ran the girls-in-trades program, but it ran better than expected as initial attendee numbers was only 40, yet the figure grew to be in the 100s, of which many were from local Canberra high schools.
"We are really happy with the response we have had," Skills Centre director Dr Stenlake told The Canberra Times.
"What we have found at other [CIT trade] events is that the guys tend to rush in and the girls hang back a bit, but you can see how engaged everyone is ... given the opportunity they [girls] are right in there."
