Canberra's New Suburb

Monday May 18, 2009

Canberra welcomes a new suburb to its city, which will be known as Beard in honour of an convict that has been described as 'industrious'.

Next to Oaks Estate in Canberra, Beard will be named after a convict who became a pioneering landlord named Timothy Beard.

The land is leased for 145 blocks for industrial purposes and the 45ha of land is technically not a suburb, said Neil Savery from the ACT Planning and Land Authority boss.

''It's not large enough for, say, a prime minister's name to be allocated to it, which is typically held for very large suburbs. And, of course, you have to be dead as well," Mr Savery told The Canberra Times.
