Canberra Convention Centre's Business Soars
Sunday May 17, 2009
The Canberra Convention Bureau was celebrating last night with the news it has secured $23 million in conference business in just six months, its best result in five years.
Despite the global economic crisis, the bureau has managed to boost interest in Canberra as a meeting place.
The bureau's chief executive, Robyn Hendry, said it had done that partly by focusing on the knowledge market, looking for an event with gravitas and tapping into the city's intellectual assets rather than chasing the corporate sector seeking a "quasi-junket".
The result was a 77 per cent improvement on the previous year's figures, which were still in recovery mode after the closure of the Canberra Convention Centre in 2007 for renovations, but still the best outcome since 2004.
