Kangaroo Cull Suspended

Saturday May 16, 2009

Animal rights group, Animal Liberation NSW, is disputing the grant of a culling licence on kangaroos on Defence land, resulting in a Canberra tribunal suspending the action.

The animal rights group sent in an application to the ACT Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal and said that the plan to undertake a rool cull at the Majura training area should not begin unless there has been a thorough review of scientific evidence that endangered species and grasslands will be affected.

The cull was suspended when General president Linda Crebbin found that Animal Liberation would be disadvantaged if it application was rejected, ordering the cull to be suspended until a hearing could be heard on the licence grant.

Ms Crebbin said that she doubted that threatened species would be affected in the area.

The culling licence was granted to the Defence Department by the ACT Conservator of Flora and Fauna on 9 April.
