ACT Disability Scheme Falters

Monday May 11, 2009

Australian Capital Territory's disability equipment scheme has been described as inadequate and disjointed with vast problems and archaic record-keeping, according to an ACT Health report.

The draft report recommends the system, which subsidises wheelchair, prostheses and other items' cost, is overhauled and begins to fully fund these items.

Inside the report are case studies that show how families have had to wait for months to receive necessary equipment or live without.

The ACT report stated that people had to go to hospital because they never received their equipment, while others moved to Queanbeyan to access the benefits of the NSW health system.
