Canberra Bridge Contested

Thursday April 2, 2009

Canberra groups have opposed the $30million pedestrian Immigration Bridge across Lake Burley Griffin saying that it goes against Canberra town's designer Walter Burley Griffin.

The Walter Burley Griffin Society, National Trust of Australia ACT branch and the Canberra Yacht Club all believed that an immigration monument was valid but not as a bridge across the lake.

Immigration Bridge Australia, a registered not-for-profit organisation, is keen to finish the bridge to commemorate migrants' contributions by Canberra's centenary in 2013.

Cycling group Pedal Power support the Immigration Bridge if it is cycling friendly.

The Federal Government's Joint Committee on National Capital and External Territories is holding public hearings this week to discuss the bridge, which would extend from the National Museum of Australia on Acton Peninsula to Lennox Gardens.
