Canberrans Aware About Green Power But Usage Limited

Sunday March 29, 2009

Canberrans are well aware about renewable energy, however only a limited number are using it.

A recent report revealed that 71 per cent of ACT housesholds are aware of green power and approximately 40 per cent support using it but only 5 per cent are paying to use green power.

In contrast, the Northern Territory are the biggest users with nearly 60 per cent of residents using solar hot water. Western Australia follows with a 21 per cent use and Queensland comes in third with a nine per cent use.

Nationally households using solar hot water has increased four per cent from 2005 to 08 and about 817,000 households paid extra to take part in some form of green power scheme in the September quarter 2008, or about 10 per cent of households.

However, while Australians are trying to be more energy-efficient, our desire to buy big TVs and other household appliances hinder our attempts.

Large screen plasma and LCD televisions can use up to three times more power than older models.

Our hot weather also prompts great use of coolers and air conditioners, which are in 67 per cent of households. Dishwashers follow at 45 per cent.
