Mr Colin Madigan AO, was the principal design architect for the original Canberra building. Made of bush-hammered concrete, concrete slabs are the main facings for walls as well as the major structural component. Inside there is a painted wooden finish, a lighting grid and large brick tiles in the lower-level galleries, and wood in the upper-level galleries.

The Sculpture Garden in the National Gallery of Australia was designed and constructed in 1986 by Harry Howard and Associates and James Mollison. The triangular-shaped architecture holds 26 sculptures from both Australian and international artists. The plants are native to Australia and were selected for their tolerance of Canberra's severe winter conditions and long hot dry summers.
