Canberra District Wineries
Just out of Canberra city are fields of vines producing the most delicious fruit to make up what is known as the Canberra District Wine Region.
Only 35 minutes out of Canberra, the ACT countryside has about 140 vineyards and 35 wineries. Factors such as the range in temperature, soil types, vineyard elevations and winemakers' skills contribute to the unique taste of wine in the Canberra District.
One of the renowned wineries in the Canberra District is the Brindabella Hills Winery. Just 25kilometres north of Canberra, its new cellar door overlooks the Murrumbidgee and boasts tasty food to match its award-winning wines.
Other wineries in the region include Helm Wines, known for its trophy-winning Rieslings and top Cabernets, Lake George Winery, with its fine dining restaurant, and Pialligo Estate, just 5 minutes from Canberra CBD and famous for its award winning Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Shiraz.
If you want to make a weekender from your trip to the Canberra District Wineries, there is an extensive list of accommodation in the region, as well as cafes, restaurants and regional produce for you to try.
While you're in the area you can also enjoy the local gallery, the Bungendore Woodwork Gallery and shopping at the Mundoonen Antiques and Collectables for vintage treasures, jewellery and other delights.
Come to the Canberra District Wineries on the first weekend of April for fun at the Canberra District Wine Harvest Festival. Filled with wine, food and music, the festival is a feast for your senses. As well as all the tastings, you can also enjoy educational tours and even go grape picking.
