Canberra festivals

Canberra has two major festivals among many others. The National Multicultural Festival celebrates Australia's cultural diversity with music, dance, theatre and food. The National Folk festival embraces the history of music in Australia with plenty of entertainment and singing.

Canberra festivals are fun and many. Make sure you time your Canberra holiday so you can enjoy at least one of the entertaining Canberra festivals that it offers.

January

25 January 2009 - Australia Day Live
Australia Day Live is a special Canberra festival held on 25 January each year. It celebrates this special day in Australian history with an acclaimed line up of Aussie musicians performing on Parliament House lawns.

February

6 - 15 February 2009 - The National Multicultural Festival

The National Multicultural Festival, one of Canberra's most anticipated festivals, celebrates Australia's cultural diversity and promotes unity of Canberra and wider Australia's multicultural communities.

Held in early February, you can enjoy great food, theatre, comedy, music, dance and the popular Carnival in the City - a Latin American event where you tango, salsa and samba to the rhythmic music for hours.

7 - 15 March 2009 - The Canberra Festival

The Canberra Festival showcases Canberra style with exhibitions, music, theatre, film, dance and art over nine days, promising fun whatever age you are and wherever you are from.

Some of the 36 performances include the Balloon event, unique to the festival, as well as Celebrate in the Park complete with its spectacular light show.

April

4 - 5 April - Canberra District Wine Festival

Any wino will love the Canberra District Wine Festival. The festival has wine tasting, gourmet food, live performances and other delights in the vineyards held annually in early April.


9 - 13 April 2009 - The National Folk Festival

Turn up to the Canberra festival, the National Folk Festival, during Easter, combines song and dance that have been performed through time and puts them into the Australian folk culture.


25 April 2009 - ANZAC Day Dawn Service

On 25 April, the ANZAC Day Dawn Service is held at the Australian War Memorial. The significant Canberra festival celebrates mateship and courage and honours Australian troops who landed in Gallipoli in 1915.

7 - 17 May 2009 - The Canberra International Music Festival

Come see Australian and international performers play explosive, premier music in different venues across Canberra city during May.

June (exact date to be confirmed) 2009 - Canberra Readers and Writers' Festival

The Canberra Readers and Writers' Festival gives you the opportunity to see national and local authors in conversation and reading their work, as well as the opportunity to participate in writing workshops.


5 June 2009 - World Environment Day - Canberra

This event is one of the main ways that the United Nations helps create global awareness about the environment and our impact on it to gain more political attention and action.

25 July 2009 - National Nanna's Night

The National Nanna's Night aspires to raise awareness about Australia's ageing population, their health needs and the need for better care and more inclusion of the older generations.

15 - 23 August 2009 - National Science Week

The National Science Week in Canberra will host SCINEMA - Festival of Science Films that will show documentaries and short film on science topics. The Science Discovery Expo is on at Black Mountain in Canberra that will have plenty of shows, public lectures, film and theatre about science and interactive booths for local science agencies to show their work.

12 September - 11 October 2009 - Floriade

For a Canberra festival that's filled with colour, journey to Floriade in spring. The flower festival, held over 30 days, invites you to stroll through the themed gardens filled with over a million bulbs in Canberra's Commonwealth Park.

9 - 11 October 2009 - Canberra Festival of One Act Plays

The Canberra Festival of One Act Plays began in 2000 and ever since has been a voice and opportunity for amateur theatre companies from Canberra, NSW and Victoria. Contestants from all over Australia are able to apply.

This month, the Canberra Short Film Festival and the Canberra International Film Festival are held to display the very best of short films and international films for Canberrans and the nation to enjoy. Times are yet to be confirmed for these two events.

3 November 2009 - Family and Community Fun Day

Family and Community Day is a public holiday for Canberran where the Family and Community Fun Day is held in Glebe Park, Canberra to celebrate the day and have fun with family and friends.

The day has free entertainment such as picnic games, jumping castles, face painting and balloon modelling.

You can also enjoy free live music during the day and see the Melbourne Cup broadcast on the big screen, which is held the same day.

December

December 31 2009 - Canberra New Year's Eve Celebrations

Join in the new year celebrations at Civic Square in Canberra to bring in 2010. The eve's celebrations include live entertainment including music performances and not to mention the spectacular firework show at 9pm and again at midnight.
